Tallahassee, Fla., May 7, 2019 – Yesterday, Division of Public Schools Chancellor Jacob Oliva surprised Megan Crombie, from Florida State University School in Leon County, with the news that she is one of five Teacher of the Year finalists. The statewide Teacher of the Year will be announced at the annual Florida Teacher of the Year Gala July 18 in Orlando.

“Megan Crombie has distinguished herself as one of Florida State University School’s most dynamic and well-respected teachers with her students’ outstanding performance,” said Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran. “She has demonstrated a passion for helping students reach their full potential by setting high expectations, taking advantage of technology and employing data-driven instruction strategies. I am pleased to celebrate her success as we bestow upon her this prestigious honor.”

Megan Crombie began her teaching career 14 years ago and has continually worked to develop her craft. She is currently in the second year of a three-year grant designed to integrate computer coding within the mathematics, with the goal of inspiring more diversity within the field of computer science. She has participated in the National High Magnetic Laboratory’s Research Experience for Teachers, the Phil Mickelson ExxonMobil Math and Science Teacher Academy, and Great Explorations in Math and Science. These opportunities helped her earn her National Board for Professional Standards Teaching Certification and work with future Florida educators. She also has experience piloting and publishing lessons for CPALMS, an instructional database for Florida’s teachers, and has presented at numerous education-related symposiums. In 2013, Crombie was selected as a statewide Teacher of the Year finalist.

This year’s five finalists were chosen from more than 176,900 public school teachers throughout the state. After each school district selects its Teacher of the Year, a selection committee representing teachers, principals, parents and the business community reviews each district application on the basis of outstanding ability to teach and communicate knowledge of the subject taught, professional development, philosophy of teaching, and outstanding school and community service.

The Florida Teacher of the Year Program is made possible by generous sponsors: Florida Prepaid, State Farm, Helios Education Foundation, Florida Blue, Wells Fargo, Voya Financial®, Florida Power and Light Company, Publix Super Market Charities, Universal Orlando Resort, Blue Man Group and Herff Jones.
